PERSPEX® CELEBRATES 75 YEARS
For those who are closely involved in the plastics industry — in design, in signage, in shop fitting, in retail, in architecture, in exhibitions, in glazing, in manufacturing — in fact in a whole host of industries and markets, it will be hard to believe that this year, Perspex® celebrates its 75th birthday.
The name Perspex comes from the Latin for “to see clearly” or “see through,” and it was this superb clarity that gave Perspex its early success. Perspex was not only clear, offering great visibility, but it was also extremely tough and hard wearing, making it ideal for use in aircraft glazing during World War II and in building applications in post-war Britain.
Today, new products, new technologies and new challenges lie ahead – and the company looks forward to the next 75 years of inspiration.

NEW 19 MM FOAMALUX
Brett Martin has announc ed the introduction of a new chunky 19 mm thickness of its Foamalux “Bright” White range. Available in a choice of thicknesses, from 1 mm to 19 mm, Foamalux provides even more choice and greater possibilities for designers and material specifiers. The new 19 mm option means the United Kingdom’s brightest and whitest sign and display material can now be used in a broader spectrum of applications where the strength, rigidity or sheer bulk of a thicker sheet is required.
The 19 mm “Bright” White Foamalux sheet is a robust sign and display substrate that does not compromise on quality or performance across the spectrum of sign and display applications including signage, point-of-purchase displays and exhibition backdrops. In keeping with the rest of the “Bright” White range, 19 mm is a direct-to-print substrate. The brighter white colour formulation has been specifically engineered for optimum levels of UV stability to achieve outstanding digital reproduction every time. The ultra smooth, semi-matt finish to both sides of the sheet provides consistently even, reliable surfaces for both printing and the application of vinyl graphics. A uniform, expanded closed cell structure combines with a hard, flat surface, providing exceptional rigidity and mechanical properties for the intricate die cutting and routering of built-up lettering and shapes. The hard surface is also very durable, providing excellent resistance to knocks and scratches.

ASSOCIATIONS CALL FOR EU SUPPORT FOR PLASTICS
Plastics News reports that European industry associations PlasticsEurope, EuPC and Euromap are calling for the European Union to provide further assistance for the member states’ plastics industry, claiming this will help the region pull out of the economic downturn.
The groups have drawn up a joint statement and suggest ideas “to outline the way in which the plastics industry can effectively contribute to gearing up for the recovery.”
The associations say companies should have easier access to financing, due to the fact that the plastics industry in Europe generates more than 300 billion euros each year. The EU could provide further tax credits for R&D and increase support for sustainable innovations, they say.
In addition, climate change policies must be engineered to help financial recovery as well as the environment, says the statement.
