German and French Economies Contract Sharply

German and French economies contract sharply BERLIN/PARIS – Europe’s two largest economies, Germany and France, both shrank markedly in the last three months of 2012, suggesting the eurozone has slipped deeper into recession and throwing a first quarter recovery for the bloc into doubt.

The German economy contracted by 0.6 per cent on the quarter, official data showed on Thursday, its worst performance since the global financial crisis was raging in 2009. France’s 0.3 per cent fall was also slightly worse than expectations.

Worryingly for Berlin, it was export performance – the motor of its economy – that did most of the damage. “In the final quarter of 2012 exports of goods declined significantly more than imports of goods,” the German statistics office said in a statement.

Back revisions to the French figures showed its output fell by 0.1 per cent in each of the first and second quarters of 2012, meaning the country has already experienced one bout of recession in the past 12 months.

Eurozone Economy Shrinks 0.6 per cent in Q4 2012

Eurozone economy shrinks 0.6 per cent in Q4 2012 The eurozone’s economy shrank by 0.6 per cent in the fourth quarter from the previous three months, according to EU statistics released on Thursday morning, deepening the bloc’s recession and posting its worst performance in almost four years.

The fall was led by Germany and France, whose gross domestic product shrank more than expected in the fourth quarter, highlighting the fragility of forecasts for a eurozone recovery this year.

German GDP shrank 0.6 per cent in the period while France contracted 0.3 per cent compared to the previous three months. Both were marginally worse than the consensus forecasts of 0.5 and 0.2 respectively.

Italy’s economy shrank 0.9 per cent, also more than expected and a sixth straight fall. The figure for the wider EU – all 27 member states – was a fall of 0.5 per cent.

Semi‐Finished Plastics for Food Contact – Available from Stock at Ensinger

Ensinger-TECAFORM-AH_MarelSemi‐finished plastic materials used in the food industry have to comply with the requirements of the latest European Regulation (EU) no. 10/2011.

This Regulation, also known as the Plastics Implementation Measure (PIM), is aimed at excluding any toxic effects which could arise as a result of interaction between food substances and plastics. Ensinger has restructured its portfolio of semi‐finished engineering plastic products for the food industry and performed migration testing on a multitude of its stock shapes range. In order to guarantee seamless traceability, customers are provided with an extensive data package along with their stock shapes. The focal element of this data package is an order‐specific declaration of compliance as outlined by 10/2011.

To reflect the complexity of possible application conditions, the Regulation defines different test simulants, times and temperatures. Developers can use the data to derive definitive conclusions about adherence to migration values under application conditions. This allows customers to determine at an early juncture whether a material is suitable for a specific field of application involving contact with food.
